Pause

The world can be a scary place, and in our anxiety we sometimes turn towards things that hold no real safety.

We serve a God in whom we find our true solace. Take some time now to turn to God, and put your fears aside.

Listen

Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “no idol in the world really exists,” and that “there is no God but one.” Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth — as in fact there are many gods and many lords — yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

1 Corinthians 8:4-6

Think

“Wait a minute,” said Fortunatus. “Chloe, are you saying that the gods don’t exist at all? I don’t know if I can believe that. Sure, the statues are just stone, but the gods have been part of our lives for centuries. Every morning, our family gathers to offer prayers to the gods who protect our household. Is that wrong?”

Chloe waited a minute before she answered. “I know it’s hard to take in. You and I were raised to believe that the gods are real. But now I believe that there is only one God who made everything. Now I only pray to the God who is Jesus’ Father, the God who has no statue, but who speaks to me in the words of Jesus.”

“You only pray to the God of Jesus? You don’t pray with your family to the gods of your ancestors?”

“No,” she said, “and a lot of my family and friends think I’m crazy or that I hate them. It’s a big change, I know.”

Pray

O God, help me to be truly dedicated to you, and to you alone. Amen.

Go

You are going out now into a dangerous world.
But walk on with confidence,
Knowing that your God is with you,
More powerful than any evil influence,
More trustworthy than any pretender.
