Following the Star

Pause

O Star of Wonder, Star of Night, Star with royal beauty bright; westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light!

John Henry Hopkins, Jr. in “We Three Kings” (1857)

Listen

When the magi had departed, an angel from the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up. Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod will soon search for the child in order to kill him.” Joseph got up and, during the night, took the child and his mother to Egypt. He stayed there until Herod died. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I have called my son out of Egypt.

Matthew 2:13-15

Think

It is important to pay attention to our dreams. Sometimes dreams can frighten us, and sometimes dreams can lead us in a different direction.

It is clear from the scripture that the Wise Sages were paying attention to their dreams, discerning what next steps to take along their journey, following the star. And the story of Joseph is marked by heavenly visitations and important messages that come to him in dreams.

As you journey toward the star, are you paying attention to what God is revealing to you? Are you rested enough to listen and discern a possible new direction in your life’s journey as a follower of the Christ?

Pray

God who comes to me in my dreams, help me to pay attention to my dreams as you reveal yourself and may show me a new direction in my life!

Help me to listen and follow where you lead.

Amen.
