Ordinary Time

Pause

Our faith communities help us see God at work in the world. Together we make up the body of Christ.

Breathe in and hear God affirm you as a beloved part of the body of Christ.

Breathe out and give thanks for being a part of the body of Christ.

Listen

The commandments, Don’t commit adultery, don’t murder, don’t steal, don’t desire what others have, and any other commandments, are all summed up in one word: You must love your neighbor as yourself. Love doesn’t do anything wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is what fulfills the Law.

Romans 13:9-10

Think

The first days of school can be exciting… new clothes, new backpack, new school supplies, and seeing old and new friends. It can also be tedious… sitting through class after class reviewing the syllabus and the class rules. How much easier (and less boring) it would be if all the rules could be summed up in one word or one phrase?

Paul isn’t denying the importance of the commandments. Each one has a purpose in protecting individuals and the community. But if we all just follow the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself, the rest would fall into place. Memorizing a list of detailed rules wouldn’t be important.

Question to Ponder:

Think about the most important rules in your home. Is there one word or phrase that could sum them all up?

Pray

Dear God, help me to remember that all of our thoughts and behaviors should be dictated by how we love ourselves and our neighbors.

Love is always the answer.

Amen.
