On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

John 7:37–39

Think

“Leave each person you meet better than you found them.” What would happen if you spent an entire day trying to live by that principle? How would you treat classmates, teachers, co-workers, retail store clerks, and the drive-thru guy at McDonald’s? What would it take to leave them better than you found them? When you treat others in such a way, you usually feel better about the world around you too.

Jesus told his followers that when the Spirit came to them, rivers of living water would flow from their hearts. Their actions and words would be life-giving to the people and community around them. The Spirit of God causes you to share the same living water with others. If you let it, it will flow from you. As you share the love of Christ with others, the living water is perpetually refreshed in you, an endless supply to share with others.

It is a choice. It is your choice. Will you receive and share the gift of the Spirit?

Pray

God of living water, make me aware of how I can share your Spirit with each person I come into contact with. Grow in me a heart that affirms their humanity, shows them your love, and creates a place where you can be glorified. Amen.

Go

As the Spirit comforts you, give comfort to others. As the Spirit calls you, respond with your gifts. As the Spirit challenges, be the loving presence of God to the world around you.
