Ordinary Time

Pause

Give thanks for the Lord because he is good, because his faithful love lasts forever.

Psalm 118:1

Listen

God has the power to provide you with more than enough of every kind of grace. That way, you will have everything you need always and in everything to provide more than enough for every kind of good work. As it is written, He scattered everywhere; he gave to the needy; his righteousness remains forever.

The one who supplies seed for planting and bread for eating will supply and multiply your seed and will increase your crop, which is righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous in every way. Such generosity produces thanksgiving to God through us.

2 Corinthians 9:8-11

Think

Take a moment to think about everything that you own. Anything that you call yours. Now imagine someone telling you that it wasn’t yours after all. Would you feel thankful? I doubt it. But in a way, that it what our scripture for today is telling us.

What we have has been given to us by God. And what we have been given by God is not meant to be hoarded, but instead it is meant to be shared. That does not mean that God is telling you to give away all of your possessions. But it is reminding us to be thankful for what we have been given by God and in turn, bless others whenever it is possible.

Do you have an extra winter coat that you can bless a neighbor with? Do you have the ability to make cookies and share them with your elderly neighbor? Can you babysit for the single mom at church once a month? God has blessed us and calls us to bless others in return.

Question to Ponder:

How can you take what God has blessed you with and bless others this week?

Pray

Holy God, thank you for all that you have given to me in my life.

Help me to remember that what I have is a gift from you, and help me to use what I have been given to be a blessing to others.

Amen.

Go

May the spirit of thanksgiving live within you,

not just during the season of thankfulness,

but from the time you rise in the morning

until the time you lay your head down at night.

May the name of the Lord be praised!
