Ordinary Time
O God,
let something essential and joyful happen in me now,
something like the blooming of hope and faith,
like a grateful heart,
like a surge of awareness
of how precious each moment is,
that now, not next time,
now is the occasion
to take off my shoes
to see every bush afire,
to leap and whirl with neighbor,
to gulp the air as sweet wine…

Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two covenant tablets in his hand, Moses didn’t realize that the skin of his face shone brightly because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw the skin of Moses’ face shining brightly, they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called them closer. So Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and Moses spoke with them. After that, all the Israelites came near as well, and Moses commanded them everything that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.
Exodus 34:29-32
When I saw the fresh roll of original flavor Life Savers in my spouse’s car the other day, I just knew I couldn’t leave our lunch together without one. So I didn’t. I took two actually, both red ones. What flavor is that? Red? I knew after I got back to my office that I had made a mistake. I went back to work with bright red lips and a tongue to match. Didn’t talk to many people for a little while.
We shouldn’t expect to leave an encounter with God, with God’s glory, and not appear, outwardly and inwardly, like something has happened. It has. We see this when Moses comes down from meeting God on Mount Sinai. I’m not sure he knows that he glows until the people react to his difference, maybe until he had met with the leaders.
We should always expect to be changed.

How am I reflecting my encounters with you today, God?
Make me open to these holy moments wherever I go.
Amen.
Go into this day
with all your senses tuned
to experience glimpses of God’s glory
in your every day.
