When it comes to living a life that is rich, we know that it takes more than money. It has to include work that is meaningful and relationships that nourish.
That is the kind of life that God is interested in offering us. But we have choices to make; the appeal of true poverty, a life spent in self-interest and solitude, is surprisingly strong.
Choose now the richness of life God offers.
"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man's table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.'"

What does it mean to be “rich?” When you hear someone is rich, what is the first thing you think of – a big house, nice car, thick wallet? In today’s passage, we are faced with the reality of a “poor” man and a “rich” man. But the words used to describe them are based on the standards of the world.
How does God view riches? If you were to hear God describe a rich person, what would that sound like? I think that description would involve a life full of love. A life of giving and receiving love, of a person who is willing to give what they have, no matter how great or small. I think God’s description of a “rich” life would include a relationship with God, and a life that reflects that relationship.
May we strive to define our lives based on God’s riches instead of what others may think.
