Ordinary Time

Pause

Is God enough for you to be enough?

Too often, we focus so much on our own accomplishments and failures that we forget that God is behind the scenes, beneath our feet, beyond our imaginations doing unexpected things and offering undeserved grace. And maybe that’s enough . . .

“God has the power to provide you with more than enough of every kind of grace. That way, you will have everything you need always and in everything to provide more than enough for every kind of good work.”

2 Corinthians 9:8

Listen

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, Most High; to proclaim your loyal love in the morning, your faithfulness at nighttime with the ten-stringed harp, with the melody of the lyre because you’ve made me happy, Lord, by your acts. I sing with joy because of your handiwork.

Psalm 92:1-4

Think

Do you ever lie in bed at night replaying the last 24 hours in your head, the highs and lows, the joys and pains, the “what ifs” and “what might have beens”?

Or maybe you can’t get out of bed in the morning because you can’t stop thinking about what the day ahead holds in store?

It seems as though the Psalmist also had preoccupations in bed in the morning and at night. But what a difference in where the Psalmist’s attention was turned!

The writer of the Psalm began and ended the day, focusing not on his or her own actions but rather on the work of God. And rather than leading to frustration and disappointment or fear and anxiety, focusing attention on the work God was doing gave the Psalmist a spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving, hope and courage.

Just imagine if each morning began with the trust that “Today, God is going to do more than enough.” Just imagine if each evening concluded with the expression of praise and relief that “Today, God did more than enough.”

Pray

God, I give thanks for the work you have done, and I place my trust in the work you are going to do today. Your goodness and mercy are enough for me to be grateful, and your promises and faithfulness are enough for me to be hopeful. In you, I have all I need today. Amen.

Go

“Our hearts are restless until they find rest in You.”

Augustine

Beneath our concerns that we may never be or have enough, may we seek and find rest in God’s abundant enough.
