Ordinary Time

Pause

God wants to be known. Across the ages since the beginning of creation, God has wanted to be made known in a real and personal way among humankind. Still today with us, God wants to be known.

In God’s great bigness and mighty justice, in swift glimpses we catch of Divine glory on display, in the life and witness of a community living their faith out loud, and in spite of all efforts to suppress the reality of God, God is made known.

How are you allowing God to be made known in your life today?

Listen

The Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” Moses said, “Show me your glory, I pray.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, ‘The Lord’; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live.” And the Lord continued, “See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”

Exodus 33:17-23

Think

The movie Jerry Maguire (1996) gave us one of the great lines in screen history – “Show me the money!” Sports agent Jerry Maguire is pleading with his one lone remaining client, football receiver Rod Tidwell. They are in the locker room. Tidwell demands Maguire to say the phrase “Show me the money!” like he means it. Finally, after several attempts, Maguire is screaming “Show me the money!” Tidwell keeps Maguire as his sports agent.

This epic movie line harkens back to Moses’s statement to God, “Show me your glory.” The boldness of Moses we found in yesterday’s passage continues. God promises to go with the Hebrew people on their exodus journey. Moses needs confirmation that God has found favor in him. He needs God to be made known to him unlike ever before, so he asks to see God’s glory.

God complies, graciously. The divine Creator passes in front of Moses. Moses may only glimpse God’s back, but it is enough to carry him and the people on in their journey.
