Ordinary Time

Pause

Close your eyes, take a deep breath.

Prepare your mind and heart for what God wants to give you today.

Listen

Honoring the Lord is correct, lasting forever. The Lord’s judgments are true. All of these are righteous! They are more desirable than gold—than tons of pure gold! They are sweeter than honey—even dripping off the honeycomb!

Psalm 19:9-10

Think

I remember when I was young and people talked to me about rules, my mind went blank. When we’re young, our least favorite thing is to be told about rules. When grownups talk to us about rules, it is most likely followed by instructions of things to do. What we don’t like about rules is that they set expectations, and sometimes those expectations mean that we can’t do a good job.

The crucial thing about the rules God gives us is that they are fair rules. They do not seek to make us fail. Instead, they make us wise. When I read how God gives me these rules to do good work in God’s name, like helping the less fortunate, my heart rejoices, because I know God’s only expectation of me is that I be faithful to God’s rules which are more valuable than gold.

If we are faithful to God’s rules, surely the work we do in God’s name will be good.

Question to Ponder:

How are God’s rules helpful for us in doing the work God calls us to do?

Pray

God, I know on many occasions it is difficult for me to follow your rules, and for that reason it is sometimes difficult for me to do the good work you want me to do. I ask you to take away any fear I have of following your rules. I ask you to give me wisdom so the work I do reflects your rules and who you are.

Amen.

Go

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord’s face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the eyes of God’s favor be upon you and may you do the work that God has put in you.
