Ordinary Time

Pause

Come to the throne of grace,

Embraced by God’s everlasting love,

Led by Jesus’ abundant mercy,

Filled with the Spirit’s holy power.

Come boldly, with your heart wide open.

Listen

Lord, the floods have raised up — the floods have raised up their voices; the floods raise up a roar! But mightier than the sound of much water, mightier than the sea’s waves, mighty on high is the Lord! Your laws are so faithful. Holiness decorates your house, Lord, for all time.

Psalm 93:3-5

Think

Picture your favorite beach. Imagine yourself facing the ocean with your eyes closed. What sound fills your ears? Joyful feet slapping the smooth sand? Hungry birds crying out? Roaring waves pounding a steady rhythm? Open your eyes. Focus on the waves as they swell and shrink. Linger here as you reflect on the psalm today.

As the psalmist continues to sing God’s praise, they imagine a similar scene. Mighty ocean waves and surging floods roar in the mind’s eye. These powerful waters point to an even greater power—the power of God. Remembering God’s power leads the psalmist to sing about the ways God’s power is revealed: in faithful laws and holiness. Waves and floods calm and recede, but God’s truth and goodness remain constant.

Picture your favorite beach again. As you listen to the waves, think about the lyrics of the psalm. If you feel bold enough, sing your own song of God’s truth and goodness. Carry this song as a reminder of God’s holy power working within you.

Pray

Faithful One,

In this moment, slow me down to hear and see and know your power.

Open my eyes to your beautiful and holy presence.

Stir a song of praise in me.
