The Lord appeared to Solomon at Gibeon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask whatever you wish, and I’ll give it to you.”

Solomon responded, “You showed so much kindness to your servant my father David when he walked before you in truth, righteousness, and with a heart true to you. You’ve kept this great loyalty and kindness for him and have now given him a son to sit on his throne. And now, Lord my God, you have made me, your servant, king in my father David’s place. But I’m young and inexperienced. I know next to nothing.”

1 Kings 3:5-7

Think

Have you ever been selected to lead a group project and felt unprepared for the role? Too young or inexperienced? That’s exactly how Solomon, son of David, felt when he realized he’d be stepping into his father’s shoes. In verse seven of our scripture passage, we can hear a little nervousness in his voice. However, if we go back to a few verses before, we hear a story of God’s faithfulness to Solomon’s father.

It can be hard to look for God’s truth in the middle of something difficult. And still, we know that God’s loyalty and kindness are sitting there, ready for us to seek them out. God’s nature, or character, can be discovered when we look at God’s faithfulness to us and to those we love. We can be sure of God’s faithfulness even when we face challenging times.

What are practical ways to encourage yourself and remind yourself of God’s character through challenging times?

God, help me to seek you when things get hard. Remind me of your loyalty, kindness, and faithfulness. Amen.

Take a few minutes to intentionally seek God in a way that makes sense for you. This could look like journaling, exploring nature, reading scripture, or spending time with friends.
