Ordinary Time

Pause

Tell me the story of Jesus.
Write on my heart every word;
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.

Fanny Crosby in "Tell me the story of Jesus" (1880)

Listen

God revealed his hidden design to us, which is according to his goodwill and the plan that he intended to accomplish through his Son. This is what God planned for the climax of all times: to bring all things together in Christ, the things in heaven along with the things on earth.

Ephesians 1:9-10

Think

When I was in fourth grade, we took a class field trip to DeSoto Caverns, a giant cave in a small town in Alabama. We all had on our school t-shirts and rode the bus for a long time. It was a big, all-day adventure. When we got there, we got to pan for gold (didn’t find any), and then I remember holding hands with my classmates and following everyone deep into this giant cave. It was so dark I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face. It smelled damp. Eventually, all the students were led to a bench, where we were instructed to sit down in the darkness. And then, all of a sudden, the lights were turned on, and we could see all the different rock formations and different colors reflected off the sides of the cave. It was beautiful! We all cheered.

Sometimes I wish God would reveal the hidden things like in that cave – that in life, lights suddenly come on bright and beautiful to help us make sense of things that we wonder about. But for me, most of the time, clarity or understanding is a little more subtle. I’ve learned just to keep walking, holding onto God’s hand. I am learning to sit still in the darkness, trusting that wherever God has me is where I need to be – and trusting that Christ is bringing all things together.

Pray

God of Light, thank you for sharing your light into the darkness through your son Jesus. Help me to trust you in all things, big and small, and knowing that you are beside me. Amen.
