Word of God speak
Would You pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see Your majesty
To be still and know
That You're in this place.
Please let me stay and rest
In Your holiness.
Word of God speak.

Listen

All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him.

John 1:3-10

Think

Jesus was with God at the beginning – at the creation of the world. I like the phrase “came into being.” It’s used three times in verse three. As a music composer, usually when I am writing a song I have to work at it for a while. A line, or a musical phrase slowly takes shape. Only looking back can I tell the story of how a song came into being. I like the idea of creation becoming – slowly and carefully. It implies intention and focus.

Jesus is noted as the Divine Spark – life and light to all people. And right here, just five verses into John’s Gospel, he gives away the ending. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” But it’s okay; we already know how the story ends. This reminder is good for us to hear every once in a while, because many of us notice a lot of darkness in the world. Just like the other John in this passage, John the Baptist, we are to be witnesses to the Light. How will you be a witness to the Light of Christ today?

Pray

Divine Spark, I am overwhelmed at your grace poured out to me through Jesus. I am overwhelmed by your light that shines deep into my darkness and I remember that nothing is hidden from you. So, open and honest, I bow before you today and pray for an opportunity to be your witness, through my actions and words to those around me. Amen.

Go

See, it is Jesus, Jesus has appeared;
Do not doubt at all for nothing you will fear.
Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing;
Tell it without ceasing: Death has lost its sting.

Yours is the glory, Resurrected One!
Endless is the victory you o'er death have won.
