Ordinary Time

Pause

Jesus says to us, “Come to me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

What are you carrying that you need to unload?

Imagine that you are holding it in your hands. In your mind, place what you are holding into the strong, scarred hands of Jesus.

Trust that he loves you and wants to carry it for you.

Listen

Simon and those with him tracked him down. When they found him, they told him, “Everyone’s looking for you!”

Mark 1:36-37

Think

What do you want people to notice about you? Often, we dress a certain way, drive a certain car, or try to associate with the right people to project an image of success and popularity. We want our Facebook and Twitter posts to get liked and reposted because they are witty and our opinions are validated. But Christ shows us a kingdom perspective on drawing people to ourselves and, ultimately, to God.

Jesus had gone to a quiet place to be alone and pray. His disciples found him and said that the crowds were looking for him. Jesus certainly wasn’t wealthy, his buddies were a group of poor fishermen and a hated tax collector, and his opinions got him in trouble with the leaders. Jesus captivated people because he loved them unconditionally and sought to restore them – mind, body, and spirit.

When we love like Jesus did, without judgment, modeling justice and forgiveness, we too will be noticed. It won’t be to glorify ourselves, but Christ, allowing others to experience the grace we have ourselves experienced.

Pray

I confess, Lord, that I have often sought attention and approval from the world around me. Remind me that my worth comes from you, my Creator and Redeemer. Help me to love generously, forgive freely, and stand for justice so others see you reflected in me and Christ glorified. Amen.

Go

Go, believing in the power of the good news to restore, heal, forgive, and bring peace.

Jesus says: “I have said these things so that you will have peace in me. In the world you have distress. But be encouraged! I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33)
