Ordinary Time

Pause

The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn't have been complete without you. Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you....

There's only one catch. Like any other gift, the gift of grace can be yours only if you'll reach out and take it.

Maybe being able to reach out and take it is a gift too.

Frederick Buechner in Wishful Thinking, 1973

Listen

The Lord was attentive to Sarah just as he had said, and the Lord carried out just what he had promised her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Abraham when he was old, at the very time God had told him. Abraham named his son—the one Sarah bore him—Isaac. Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old just as God had commanded him. Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born. Sarah said, “God has given me laughter. Everyone who hears about it will laugh with me.” She said, “Who could have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse sons? But now I’ve given birth to a son when he was old!”

Genesis 21:1-7

Think

How appropriate that the legacy Sarah and Abraham leave the world is called Laughter. The moment of grace in which Sarah laughed at God’s absurdity begets an even greater gift of grace, who became one of the great fathers of the Israelites.

The moment of grace in which Abraham pleaded with three men to accept his hospitality gave birth to a dream being planted in Sarah for the future of her family. The moment of grace in which God fulfilled God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah found life as Isaac took his first breaths in the world.

Take faith in the small moments of grace you find before you. You never know what will come of them. By the grace of God, they will be life-changing and life-giving.

Pray

God of Grace, help me to see how extravagant your grace can be. Show me the legacy your grace can leave if I only have the courage to accept it and share it and trust it. Thank you for small moments of grace. Amen.
