The faith-community of the blessed is the community of the Crucified. With him they lost everything, and with him they found everything.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer in The Cost of Discipleship (1937)

He has told you, human one, what is good and what the Lord requires from you: to do justice, embrace faithful love, and walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8

Think

As a collection of over five dozen books spread out over roughly a thousand pages, the Bible can be an intimidating book.

If you’re looking for direction and wisdom from this ancient library of divine revelation, it can be difficult to know where to begin. It can even feel overwhelming, as if standing in a cereal aisle with 75 cereals to choose from when all you need is something for breakfast.

The prophet Micah understood this challenge that was facing him and his fellow Israelites, and the temptation to feel overwhelmed in light of all the commands within their Scriptures for living a good life. In a moment of inspiration, Micah simplified it for them with these words that cut straight to the heart of holiness.

Centuries later, Jesus would do the same. What all of these inspired instructions boil down to, he would tell a group of similarly overwhelmed Israelites, is just this: Love God and love people.

This is the path to lasting happiness. This is the good life.

Pray

God, sometimes life can feel so overwhelming and I don’t know what to do.

Help me to remember the simplicity of faith – walking humbly with you, faithfully loving others, and doing justice.

Help me to remember that this is enough.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

May God meet you in the margins
And find you in the cracks.
May God bless you in the wanting
And in everything you lack.
May God fill the empty spaces
And become your all in all.
May God lead you to the places
Where you’re the answer to God’s call.
