Ordinary Time
Breathe in and out.
Listen with your whole self.
Listen with your ears, focused on the Holy Word.
Listen with your hands, open to Jesus’ embrace.
Listen with your heart, steadied by the Spirit’s presence.
Listen with your feet, grounded on God’s truth.
Oh, I must find rest in God only, because my hope comes from him! Only God is my rock and my salvation—my stronghold!—I will not be shaken. My deliverance and glory depend on God. God is my strong rock. My refuge is in God. All you people: Trust in him at all times! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our refuge!
Psalm 62:5-8
Growing up, my cousins, siblings, and I clocked a lot of hours playing tag. Even when we argued about it, “base” was a part of every game. Each one of us ran to the place where we could calm our labored breathing away from the outstretched hand of the tagger. “Base” gave us refuge so we could keep playing.
We don’t know how long the psalmist has been waiting for God. How long have the outstretched hands of fear or pain or despair chased after her? Thankfully, she’s found “base.” God’s presence surrounds her with hope, peace, and liberation. God alone is her refuge in the chaos and struggle of life. Each time she finds sanctuary in God’s presence she’s empowered to continue the journey to which God calls her.
We, too, know what it’s like to need a refuge, a place that restores and strengthens us. Read the Psalm again and hear God calling you to sanctuary in God’s holy presence.
