Journey to the Cross

Pause

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

– Ancient Chinese proverb by Lao Tzu

Listen

Jesus replied, “The light is with you for only a little while. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn’t overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness don’t know where they are going. As long as you have the light, believe in the light so that you might become people whose lives are determined by the light.”

John 12:35-36a

Think

Walking in the dark is scary so these are wise words from Jesus: walk around in the light. When we think about Jesus as the light on our journey of Holy Week, this metaphor is clear. We have to walk with Jesus while we can because he’s going to die on the cross. The last part of our scripture for today, though, gives us some direction for our steps. Let us believe in Jesus so our lives are determined by the light.

I’m picturing this like the flashlight on our phones: with those phones in our pockets, we know we’ll never have to be in complete darkness. When we find ourselves in the shadowy places in our lives (like in the news cycle or when we can’t seem to find hope), we remember that Jesus walks with us. We can shine a light; after all, we always have it with us (and this time I’m not talking about the flashlight on our phones).

Question to Ponder:

What or who can help you remember to shine the light of Christ into the shadowy places in your life?

Pray

Holy God, remind me today that when there are shadowy places in my life, Jesus the Light of the World is with me.

Some of the shadowy places in my life right now are…

Help me to know that no matter where my journey leads me, it will never be away from you. Amen.

Go

May God bless the steps you take today in your faith journey.
