Ordinary Time

Pause

Pray a breath prayer, silently repeating the following phrases from Psalm 46 with each deep breath. (Repeat for as long as you like, but aim for at least 4-5 times.)

Breathe in: ā€œBe still and knowā€

Breathe out: ā€œthat I am God.ā€

Listen

Let my whole beingĀ bless theĀ Lord! Lord my God, how fantastic you are! You are clothed in glory and grandeur! You wear light like a robe; you open the skies like a curtain. You build your lofty house on the waters;Ā you make the clouds your chariot, going around on the wings of the wind.

Psalm 104:1-3

Think

Whether itā€™s admiring soft clouds in a clear blue daytime sky or staring up at a night sky full of stars, Iā€™ve always felt close to God when I look at the sky. Open and all-encompassing, whether youā€™re looking up from a city street or a quieter spot in nature, what floats above us is a reminder that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, bigger than what we can see at any given moment. God, too, is beyond any one description we could come up with.

Todayā€™s scripture ends with God ā€œgoing around on the wings of the wind.ā€ In Hebrew, the original language of the Psalms, the word for wind and spirit is the same. We canā€™t see wind as much as we can see what it does, just like we canā€™t completely describe God, but God is still everywhere. So next time you look up and notice something rustling in the breeze, may you feel the Spirit of God with you.

Question to Ponder:

If someone asked you to describe God, what would you say?

Pray

Expansive God, thank you for the infinite ways you move throughout creation and in my life. Help me to notice you wherever I go, even when human words cannot fully describe you.

Amen.

Go

God be the love to search and keep me

God be the prayer to move my voice

God be the strength to now uphold me

O Christ, surround me

O Christ, surround me
