Ordinary Time

Pause

Breath of Heaven, comfort us with new life and hope.

Breath of Life, empower us to act creatively and compassionately.

Breath of Peace, guide us in the way of love and truth.

Listen

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger because you are with me. Your rod and your staff— they protect me.

Psalm 23:4

Think

There’s a saying that silence is golden.

Some of us might be enjoying this quarantine lifestyle with solitude and respite from large crowds, and that is understandable and good. Others of us may be itching to be out and socializing in groups, which is also understandable and good. In either case, there is a remarkable difference between solitude and isolation. The former can be nourishing and teachable; the latter often unsettling and symptomatic of a deeper issue. Both, however, involve silence.

Silence, remember, can be golden. Silence compels us to listen closely. Silence slows us down. Silence draws our attention to the power of presence. When we are silent with our thoughts and surroundings, what remains? Or rather, who remains? The One whose presence within says: “I am with you. My rod and staff, they protect you.”

No matter the impact of silence on you — be it blissful appreciation or fearful uneasiness — may we recall the promise of Psalm 23: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, God is with me.” Yes, the Holy One is with you, on this very day and all your days to come.

Pray

God my Shepherd, you promise to be with me, always and forever. No matter the darkest valleys, your promise is steadfast and true. Help me to stay connected to you and to community. And may my actions and behaviors today be a source of encouragement for others to do the same. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Go

God the Shepherd, bless us and keep us.

God the Redeemer, smile upon us and be gracious towards us.

God the Spirit, lead us in the path of wisdom and peace.

And all of God’s people say: Amen.
