Following the Star
Breathe. Take in some deep grounding breaths. Pull your shoulders back, feel the ground beneath you. Once you have settled, take one more deep breath saying or thinking:
INHALE: Holding on to joy doesn’t mean I am always happy.
EXHALE: It means I will not be overcome by despair.
God is indeed my salvation; I will trust and won’t be afraid. Yah, the Lord, is my strength and my shield; he has become my salvation.
Isaiah 12:2
What are you afraid of? I have to think that the author of our text from Isaiah is referring to a fear that is more than having the “heebie jeebies,” being a scaredy cat, or a phobia. Typically, we are regulated enough to not be constantly spinning about all the things we are fearful of. At the same time, it seems like there are more things to be afraid of that can actually harm us: violence of all sorts, climate change and the disasters that follow, hate crimes, and extremists. These are closer to the kinds of fear that the author is speaking of.
Before fear comes trust in God and salvation. What helps you when you become consumed by fear? How do you help your body regulate? Who do you go to for support? How can these moments be a time of faith building? Remember, you are not alone in fear. God’s presence is promised throughout scripture. If you need a reminder, ask someone you know about how their faith has been shaped through fear.

Question to Ponder:
Which is more powerful in your life, joy or fear?
God of scaredy cats, there seem to be more and more things to fear every day. Please help me to remember you are present. Help me to surround myself with people who can support me through my fear. Thank you for the promise of abiding joy through it all. Amen.
You are the God of justice
You are the God who sees
You are the God who heals and
Who loves the world through me
We believe our love can change things
We will not live silently
You are the God of justice
You are the God who sees
You oh Lord are with us
We will not be afraid
