Following the Star

Pause

As we journey through Advent, we would be wise to remember that is in fact a journey – not just for the Biblical cast, but for us as well.

Prepare yourselves today to listen for the word and guidance of God as we, too, follow the star closer to the heart of God.

Listen

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

John 1:6-8

Think

Sometimes we need people to point us in the right direction, to show us where the star is that we’re supposed to follow.

John the Baptist was that person in Judea as the world prepared for the birth of Jesus. He was sent ahead to prepare the way, to show people what to watch for, and to prepare their hearts. John was not the star that we are to follow, but he was a helpful guide along the way, providing guidance where the people couldn’t see it for themselves.

There are people like this in our lives that show us the way when we can’t see it ourselves or don’t even know we have something else to watch for. Who are those people for you? Who points you toward the light? John’s arrival is a reminder to us to keep looking for those who show us the way to go.

Pray

God, please help me keep my eyes open for those who would show me the way, and help me remember to thank them for their guidance in my life. Amen.

Go

Look today for the stars in your life, providing guidance along the journey towards the heart of God – your mission in this world.

And go, following bravely and joyfully, wherever the star may lead you as you make Christ’s presence in the world known.
