Ordinary Time
In athletics, “on your mark” is the signal that precedes everything. Stop. Breathe. Get into position. God has something to say to you today. The race that matters is about to begin.
As Jesus walked alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, because they were fishermen.“Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” Right away, they left their nets and followed him. Continuing on, he saw another set of brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father repairing their nets. Jesus called them and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Matthew 4:18-22
I grew up in Puerto Rico. As a child, I learned to swim in the sea. And in the sea, I learned something that is not taught in a pool: when a big wave comes, you can’t hesitate. You hear it coming before you see it. The water rises. If you hesitate, the wave knocks you down. You have to decide fast: you jump in, or you jump out.
Simon Peter and Andrew were about their business, casting the net, when they heard, “Follow me.” And the text says that “immediately” they left the nets. Without hesitation. Without asking for more time. They jumped in. James and John did the same. They left the boat. They left their father. They responded instantly.
Sometimes God calls us in the midst of the normal—in the midst of work, in the midst of routine, in the midst of the familiar. And God asks us to let go of something good to embrace something better. What are you carrying today that prevents you from responding? Let it go. The wave is coming.

Question to Ponder:
What “net” do you need to let go of today to fully respond to God’s call?
God, give me the courage to answer your call without hesitation. Help me to let go of what holds me back and follow you with all that I am. Amen.
Go out today with purpose. Don’t run alone. Run with the team God gave you, with the gifts God gave you, into the world God loves so much. On your mark, get set…go!
