Ordinary Time

Pause

Listen!

Can you hear it?

The sound of the water, first trickling, then flowing faster, then rushing headlong?

It is the Living Water, flowing through us.

Listen

Right then, in the middle of the night, the jailer welcomed them and washed their wounds. He and everyone in his household were immediately baptized. He brought them into his home and gave them a meal. He was overjoyed because he and everyone in his household had come to believe in God.

Acts 16:33-34

Think

Imagine being this jailer who is brought into fellowship with God through two miracles: the first that his prisoners were unchained, the second that they did not flee. What would be your response? The jailer and his family gave themselves over to the Living Water in baptism. But he also responded to this miracle by living as Jesus lived – washing the wounds of the injured, feeding the hungry ones who had been in prison, and celebrating God’s presence with all his household.

When the Living Water comes to us this way, we can’t help but drink it in. But while it nourishes us, will we share it with others? Will we tend the sick, feed the hungry, share all that we have with joy? Will we act without delay, like the jailer did, to set prisoners free? Will we pour the Living Water out, giving all that we have received in celebration of the One who gave it?

Pray

Oh Living Water, let me not only rest in you, but act in you, sharing your love, your joy, your freedom, and your healing as a sign of your coming kingdom.

Amen.
