Ordinary Time
Listen!
Can you hear it?
The sound of the water, first trickling, then flowing faster, then rushing headlong?
It is the Living Water, flowing through us.
“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to bear witness to all of you about these things for the churches. I’m the root and descendant of David, the bright morning star. The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ Let the one who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let the one who is thirsty come! Let the one who wishes receive life-giving water as a gift.”
Revelation 22:16-17
John, exiled on the island of Patmos, had a dream of God’s triumph over evil. It was a frightening vision, filled with terrifying creatures, horrendous violence, and enough symbols to make an English teacher throw up her hands in frustration. For two millennia, followers of Jesus have tried to make sense of it, spinning out diagrams and doctrines and diatribes. Unfortunately, we have mostly missed the point.
Here at the end of John’s dream, Jesus arrives in his familiar form, making himself clear to his servant. After all the drama of the vision, it’s as if Jesus shows up to say, “Don’t worry so much about all that. I’m here, and I’m inviting you. Not just you, but anyone – anyone within the sound of my voice. Anyone who can hear the sound of the Living Water,” Jesus shouts, “can come and drink their fill. This is what I came to tell you. Come, all of you. Come!”

Oh Living Water, I hear your invitation to come.
Help me to not get so wrapped up in trying to figure everything out that I forget that you are calling, in the loudest voice you can make, to come home to you.
Amen.
Did you hear it?
The Living Water, rushing all around and flowing into the ocean of God?
Follow it there, and immerse yourself in God’s love.
