Pause

Listen!

Can you hear it?

The sound of the water, first trickling, then flowing faster, then rushing headlong?

It is the Living Water, flowing through us.

Listen

Those of you who love the Lord, hate evil! God guards the lives of his faithful ones, delivering them from the power of the wicked.

Light is planted like seed for the righteous person; joy too for those whose heart is right.

Rejoice in the Lord, righteous ones! Give thanks to his holy name!

Psalm 97:10-12

Think

Psalm 97 paints a picture of a great and awesome God, surrounded by clouds and lightning. The first six verses invite the hearer to imagine the glory of God’s majesty, which causes all other gods to bow before our God. The last six speak of our response to God. In verses 7-9, we listen to God, exalt God’s name, and refuse to bow to idols. And the final three verses remind us that worship is not the only response that God is owed.

To receive the Living Water is to be empowered to follow God. We choose good over evil because Jesus did – because it is a sign of the coming Kingdom of God. But when we read “light shines on the righteous,” we might wonder: does it always? Doing the right thing doesn’t always bring an immediate happy result. But we trust that God’s light is shining even if we don’t feel it, because we reflect the glory of the one who made us.

Pray

Oh Living Water, I am humbled by your glory.

Help me to be a reflection of that glory in doing good, as you empower me.

Amen.

Follow it there, and immerse yourself in God’s love.
