Ordinary Time
Breathe in, breathe out.
Open your mind to the Spirit of truth.
Open your heart to the Spirit of compassion.
Open your hands to the Spirit of justice.
Open yourself to the Spirit of God, moving in you.
The same Spirit agrees with our spirit, that we are God’s children. But if we are children, we are also heirs. We are God’s heirs and fellow heirs with Christ, if we really suffer with him so that we can also be glorified with him.
Romans 8:16-17
Vintage versions of the game Monopoly have a community chest card that says “You inherit $100.” A picture shows a man looking overwhelmed as he’s encouraged to buy luxurious items with the money he’s received. The card perfectly depicts our understanding of being an heir and receiving an inheritance — it’s extra money we get to buy fancy things.
Paul offers the Roman church a completely different concept of inheritance. As God’s children, our inheritance is shared with Jesus. Our inheritance doesn’t get us more stuff or secure a “better” life for us. With Jesus, we experience struggle and pain. We also experience real and abundant life. What we receive from God isn’t a fleeting gift. It sustains us in all circumstances. It draws us into the rhythms of God’s reign. It turns our focus away from ourselves and towards those God calls us to love.
Have you ever thought of yourself as sharing an inheritance with Jesus? How does knowing this change the way you interact with your family, friends, and neighbors?
