Following the Star

Pause

The light keeps shining in the dark, and the darkness has never put it out.

John 1:5 (CEV)

Listen

Sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord! Bless his name! Share the news of his saving work every single day! Declare God’s glory among the nations; declare his wondrous works among all people because the Lord is great and so worthy of praise. He is awesome beyond all other gods because all the gods of the nations are just idols, but it is the Lord who created heaven! Greatness and grandeur are in front of him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Psalm 96:1-6

Think

It’s now a few days after Christmas, and my mom is still singing Christmas songs and watching Christmas movies and will be for a while. For others, we may already be moving on towards the new year, getting ready to go back to school after a long break, and looking ahead to what’s next. The songs of Christmas are starting to fade.

But the scriptures remind us that we should be singing praises of God, we should be singing of God’s salvation and God’s great work. By doing so we stay mindful of all that God has done, is doing, and will do for us. Christmas hymns, by their nature, are about hope and renewal. We sing of the birth of a Savior and imagine peace on earth through the Holy Spirit.

So if singing Christmas hymns in October or December or July helps you to do that, then sing away! Sing the Lord a song, sing for all the earth to hear! Whatever helps you to to be mindful of God’s presence and love, let it shine!

Pray

Your Spirit, O Lord, speaks to us in so many different ways, inspires us to serve and sing and act in ways that can astound us. I pray that I may never stop feeling your presence in my life. I pray that you continue to inspire me to sing or dance or yell your praises, each and every day. Amen.

Go

The Light has come.

The Light is within us.

Go and let the Light shine.
