Journey to the Cross

Pause

In the forced solitude of waiting, lean into silence.

In the mindfulness of inhaling, exhale grace.

In the intentionality of washing your hands, feel God’s presence with you.

In the darkest valley, remember that Christ is the light of the world.

Listen

You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord, so live your life as children of light. Light produces fruit that consists of every sort of goodness, justice, and truth. Therefore, test everything to see what’s pleasing to the Lord, and don’t participate in the unfruitful actions of darkness. Instead, you should reveal the truth about them. It’s embarrassing to even talk about what certain persons do in secret. But everything exposed to the light is revealed by the light. Everything that is revealed by the light is light. Therefore, it says, Wake up, sleeper! Get up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

Ephesians 5:8-14

Think

There is so much more to see. Every day brings with it something new, but far too often, we fail to see it. We take the people, places, and things around us for granted. It is as though we are sleep walking through life, unaware of the dynamic interactions and changes happening all around us. At times, we are too comfortable with our understanding of people and things and so we rely on our certainty. But certainty has a way of blinding us to light and putting us to sleep.

Saint Paul reminds us that God invites us to wake up. Perhaps the current situation in our world with the spreading COVID-19 virus could also be seen as a call to wake up, to pay attention to God’s presence and to our neighbors’ needs for goodness, justice, and truth.

Waking up is not something that we should hold on to for ourselves alone. No, the light of seeing and being is meant to be shared with those around us. We are to share our light with others, helping them, too, to wake up and see things in a different way.

Pray

God, help me to wake up. Help me not to sleep walk through my life. Help me to walk as your child, a child of light. Amen.
