Listening for God requires us to be tuned in with all of our senses. God may speak to us through our ears, but more often God speaks to us through our hearts, minds, souls, and even our bodies.
We need to learn to be open to listening to God on God’s terms, not necessarily our own.
Stop and prepare to hear from God today!
He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.”
Mark 14:41-42
In the final stanza of John Legend’s song, “Wake Up,” we are offered this call to action: “Oh wake up everybody, no more sleepin’ in bed, I need a little help, y’all, can’t do it alone. Come on come on come on come on.”
Urgency! Emergency! Jesus has spoken! This sounds like a surprise fire drill during world history class that makes you spring to your feet. This is a side of Jesus we don’t always hear or choose to see. This is the “Wake up and get off your backsides” Jesus, the same Jesus who violently turned over the moneychangers’ tables in the temple.
Have you ever needed a wake-up call? God’s voice sometimes catches us in the most unlikely places and times. Have you ever heard God yelling at you to get up, wake up, and look in the mirror?

Loving God, wake me up when I become passive and tired. Give me the strength to “get out of bed” and see your great and wonderful world, full of possibilities and change. Amen.
