Ordinary Time

Pause

Take a deep breath in, consider all the things that are weighing on you today.

As you breathe out, imagine breathing out all the stress and anxiety.

Breathe in again. Imagine breathing in the love of God.

Exhale and imagine sharing that love.

Listen

Some of the redeemed had wandered into the desert, into the wasteland. They couldn’t find their way to a city or town. They were hungry and thirsty; their lives were slipping away. So they cried out to the Lord in their distress, and God delivered them from their desperate circumstances. God led them straight to human habitation.

Psalm 107:4-7

Think

Yesterday I decided to move a large piece of furniture from my upstairs bedroom to the garage. I knew I could not pick it up on my own so I decided to put it on a blanket and drag it across the room and down the stairs to the front door. I was about halfway down the stairs when I realized I could not do this on my own. As I stood on the stairs using my body to block this heavy piece of furniture from hurling down the stairs, I wondered why in the world I did not ask for help. Why did I think I had to do it on my own?

In her book, Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers, Anne Lamott says, “Here are the two best prayers I know: ‘Help me, help me, help me’ and ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you.’”

Thankfully, my best friend happened to stop by while I was standing on the stairs and helped me, but it would have been much easier if I had just asked for help from the beginning.

Our pride tells us we should be able to handle problems on our own, that asking for help is a weakness. God tells us true strength can only be found when we are willing to say, “Help me.”

Question to Ponder:

What is going on in your life that you might need help with (relationships, school, self-esteem, anger) and who is someone you trust enough to ask for help?

Pray

God my Deliverer, thank you for always being there for me.

Help me to admit when I have a problem.

Help me have the courage to ask for help.

Amen.

Go

As you go, take moments throughout the day to stop and breathe in the love of God.

Then breathe out God’s love on those around you.
