Ordinary Time

Pause

Breathe in God’s love…

Breathe out hope in Jesus Christ…

Breathe in the goodness of the Holy Spirit…

Wiggle your toes…

Place your hands on your heart…

Take one more deep breath…

Amen

Listen

The arrogant rise up against me, God. A gang of violent people want me dead. They don’t give a thought for you. But you, my Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy; you are very patient and full of faithful love.

Psalm 86:14-15

Think

Where is God in times of trouble?

In times of trouble we are called to hope for all things. When was a time that you wondered where God was, especially when it felt like someone was against you? Were you tempted to be like your foe rather than extend God’s grace? Did you remember that God was with you?

When I feel like this, under attack, I think about people who trusted God in times of trouble and knew God was with them. I think about my mom and dad who raised two children while working full time, resting in the reality of God’s presence. I think about Rev. William Sloane Coffin who stood up against injustice everywhere, empowered by the reality of God’s presence. Who are some people that you think of?

There are plenty of people like this out there, and your goal today is to find someone new who trusted God in times of trouble. Then, next time you feel afraid or under attack, know that God is with you.

Question to Ponder:

What is one time that you took a risk and remembered that God was with you?

Pray

God, be with me when I am afraid.

You bring hope and peace.

Remind me that you are with me.

I love you.

In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Receive now this shortened blessing of Saint Patrick, as sung by musician Steve Bell in his song, “The Lorica”:

“Be above me, as high as the noonday sun.

Be below me, the rock I set my feet upon.

Be beside me, the wind on my left and right.

Be behind me, oh circle me with your truth and light.”

Amen
