Following the Star

Pause

To the God who keeps promises:

Hear us.

Help us.

Restore us.

Listen

Shepherd of Israel, listen! You, the one who leads Joseph as if he were a sheep. You, who are enthroned upon the winged heavenly creatures. Show yourself before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh! Wake up your power! Come to save us! Restore us, God! Make your face shine so that we can be saved!

Psalm 80:1-3

Think

Today is the fourth Sunday of Advent when many churches light the candle of love during the worship service. Advent gives us the time and space to reflect on the fullness of God’s love for us.

In this passage, the psalmist cries out to the “Shepherd of Israel” to save us. When I think of a shepherd in the psalms, I first think of Psalm 23 and the comforting shepherd who walks with me through life’s highs and lows. That shepherd leads and guides but with a gentle touch. The shepherd in Psalm 80 does not have this same approachable imagery. This shepherd is majestic and can command a room. This shepherd is our ruler and king.

The psalmist’s plea is not a last ditch, “nothing else has worked so why not ask God to step in” prayer. It is the desperate request of someone who remembers the might and majesty of God and is fully confident in God’s ability to bring salvation.

Question to Ponder:

When have you recognized a need for God and how did God show up in that circumstance?

Pray

Shepherd of Israel, help me remember the times in my past when you have rescued me. Give me the confidence to reach out my hand and ask for help. Amen.

Go

God sees your worth even if the world can’t. Each and every day, God chooses you. May God’s strength and mercy shine through you today so that you can share God’s love with those around you.
