Ordinary Time
Stop.
Rest.
Breathe.
Open our hearts to hear the Spirit.
Jesus himself stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” They were terrified and afraid. They thought they were seeing a ghost.
He said to them, “Why are you startled? Why are doubts arising in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet. It’s really me! Touch me and see, for a ghost doesn’t have flesh and bones like you see I have.” As he said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
Luke 24:36b-40
The disciples are in utter confusion and despair after Jesus’ death, and now people are saying they have seen him alive! Before the disciples can even discuss how that could be possible, surprise! There Jesus is, standing right in front of them. His first words to his grief stricken and terrified friends are, “Peace be with you.” He must have known that his presence would be disturbing to say the least. He must have understood their sadness and confusion. What they needed in that moment was peace.
God shows up in unexpected places and offers us words of peace and comfort. Just when we think we understand this life of faith, surprise! There God is, in the least imagined spot. Pay attention and listen, for along with the surprise comes the peace that can only come from the divine.

Question to Ponder:
When have you been surprised by God?
Disrupt me, God, when I become convinced that I am far away from you. Surprise me with your closeness, with your presence. Startle me from the complacency of my daily life and remind me of your hopes for me. Bring me your peace so that I can face whatever is ahead.
Today I need your peace about….
Amen.
May God’s comfort and peace surround, enfold, and protect you
Remaining with you from this day and forevermore.
Amen.
