Ordinary Time
And tell me what it is that you see
A world that’s full of endless possibilities
And heroes don’t look like they used to
They look like you do
We are love, we are one
We are how we treat each other when the day is done
We are peace, we are war
We are how we treat each other and nothing more.

Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice spoke from the cloud, “This is my Son, whom I dearly love. Listen to him!” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
Mark 9:7-8
Today’s scripture is a continuation of yesterday’s. Together they are the traditional scripture that many Christian churches use to describe the transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus and his disciples are up on the mountain and three of the disciples see Jesus transformed into dazzling white, flanked by two of the pillars of the Israelite tradition, Moses and Elijah. Peter, James, and John are with Jesus that day. Just as Jesus is transformed before their eyes, these disciples are transformed by their experience on the mountain. There are times on our spiritual journey where we have those mountain top experiences, but most of the time our experiences come in the mundane, everyday moments. On this Transfiguration Sunday may we recognize each opportunity to be transformed by our encounters with Jesus just as the disciples did on that mountaintop.

Question to Ponder:
How can you open yourself to being transformed by your encounters with Jesus this week?
Loving God, you give me opportunities to be transformed every day. Give me the eyes to see, the ears to hear, and the heart to recognize the transformative power of the love and grace that you give me every single day. Amen.
In loving your neighbor, may you see everyone as God sees them. May you see each person around you as the image bearer of our Creator. Go in peace to love God and love your neighbor.
