We are constantly praying for you for this: that our God will make you worthy of his calling and accomplish every good desire and faithful work by his power. Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored by you, and you will be honored by him, consistent with the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

Think

As a pastor, I am trusted with people’s deepest joys and most painful secrets. I help families to celebrate new births and mourn deaths. I love my life in ministry. But I never, ever, ever feel worthy of the calling. I look around at the other pastors I know and feel like they must be more confident, more knowledgeable, more holy — in every way worthier than me.

I am encouraged by this passage from the second letter to the Thessalonians, which reminds them that no one is worthy of God’s calling! The way to become “worthy” in God’s sight is not to be perfect, but simply to pray for ourselves and each other and trust God to do good work through each of us. I will never be perfect, but I am hard at work trying to honor the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord, I know that you are working to accomplish something good in me. Help me to listen to your voice and do only your will. Amen.
