Ordinary Time
Think of something you want. Now think of something you need. In which of the two do you see God?
They asked, “What must we do in order to accomplish what God requires?”
Jesus replied, “This is what God requires, that you believe in him whom God sent.”
They asked, “What miraculous sign will you do, that we can see and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”
John 6:28-31
When we talk to older people, we hear their stories, tales, and the beautiful details of their lives. It is the expressions of “in my time” or “when I was your age” that let us know there is something of God in these memories.
The truth is that we never consider our memories as signs. We always understand signs as something that will happen in front of us, not living in the past. When we approach God, like the people in John’s gospel, we look for signs that direct us forward. However, Jesus changes their perspective, helping them remember the past. Perhaps when you talk to someone older than you, you think they will not understand you. Here Jesus reminds us of the importance of history, showing us how memories remind us of God’s presence in the past.
Our memory of what God has done helps us to believe and live new experiences. Both the past and the present serve as a sign to see God in our lives.

Question to Ponder:
What memory reminds you of God’s faithfulness?
God, help me to remember your faithfulness so that I may always be mindful of your provision.
Amen.
