Journey to the Cross

Pause

Near the cross! O lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day
With its shadow o’er me.

In the cross, in the cross
Be my glory ever,
Till my ransomed soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.

Fanny Crosby in “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross” (1869)

Listen

As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

They replied, “Its master needs it.” They brought it to Jesus, threw their clothes on the colt, and lifted Jesus onto it. As Jesus rode along, they spread their clothes on the road.

Luke 19:33-36

Think

In today’s scripture, the disciples do as Jesus said as they get the colt and tell those who ask that Jesus sent them. They then take the donkey to Jesus where they make a comfortable place for him to ride on the animal.

Do you think your life is a comfortable place for your faith? Are your heart and mind open to what God might want to teach you? Or do you sometimes want to give up on faith entirely?

We can easily be discouraged or disappointed by something that’s said (or unsaid) in church or by religious leaders. But Jesus wants us to seek to understand what faith can be and hopes that we will soften our hearts to what the real message of Jesus is. God wants us to know that if we look around, we will see examples of love, grace, and peace that point us to what true faith in God can be. How might you make your heart a comfortable place to experience Christ?

Pray

Dear God, sometimes I don’t want to hear what you have to say to me. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that it’s important to have faith in you.

Help me to make my heart a place that is comfortable for you, so that I can experience you more fully.

Amen.

Go

Near the cross! I’ll watch and wait,
Hoping, trusting ever;
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.

In the cross, in the cross
Be my glory ever,
Till my ransomed soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.
