Ordinary Time

Pause

Some mountains are tall, and some mountains are small.

But whatever your mountain is, God is already there.

Listen

The Lord’s glorious presence settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from the cloud. To the Israelites, the Lord’s glorious presence looked like a blazing fire on top of the mountain. Moses entered the cloud and went up the mountain. Moses stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

Exodus 24:16-18

Think

Driving through the neighborhood once, I saw a patch of fog sitting over a house, just the one house. It was weird. It made the house look spooky and not at all inviting. So I can only imagine what Moses must have felt to have finally gotten to the mountaintop only to see this cloud, knowing that he had to walk inside.

Faith is a bit like what Moses does in our passage — walking forward, not knowing exactly what lies ahead. There is a lot of cloudiness in the world and in our lives, clouds that haze our view and make us think twice about going ahead. But we, like Moses, can trust that God doesn’t leave us to walk alone in this world.

If the whole of God’s story teaches us one thing, it’s that God is always there, in the bright sunshine, in the foggy haziness, and even in the dark — and we can faithfully take that step forward because God is there.

Pray

Gracious God, you walk with me throughout my life. Wherever I go, you are already there. Instill in me the confidence to walk boldly where you call me to go. Amen.

Go

Go climb your mountain and see that God is holy!
