Ordinary Time

Pause

Some mountains are tall, and some mountains are small.

But whatever your mountain is, God is already there.

Listen

While he was still speaking, look, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son whom I dearly love. I am very pleased with him. Listen to him!” Hearing this, the disciples fell on their faces, filled with awe.

But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anybody about the vision until the Human One is raised from the dead.”

Matthew 17:5-9

Think

I always wondered why Jesus instructed the disciples to not tell anyone about their experience until after Jesus’ resurrection. If I had seen something so spectacular, strange, and inspiring, I’d want to tell the whole world. Yet they are to keep quiet. It’s puzzling to say the least. But then again, who would have believed something so wild anyways?

And there might be some truth to that, too. I have experienced many things that were too incredible for words. How do you explain God’s love in words? You can’t… or at least, I can’t. But I can invite someone to experience it for themselves.

I can invite someone to come to the mountaintop with me. And by inviting rather than telling, we allow God to speak to others in ways that only God can, in ways that only they can hear. The incredible experiences that God offers us are more than we can possibly describe, so let’s invite others instead, so that God can do what only God can do.

Pray

Holy God, you are more than my words. You are more than my dreams. Move me in ways that help others to see what I can only hope to describe – your immense love for all creation. Amen.

Go

Go climb your mountain and see that God is holy!
