Journey to the Cross

Pause

What does it truly mean to praise God? What is happening in that act?

Does God want our praise because God is lacking in affirmation or needs a confidence boost?

Could it be that it was our spiritual needs that God had in mind when commanding us to practice praise and to “give thanks in all circumstances”?

Listen

When Jesus and his followers approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives. Jesus gave two disciples a task, saying to them, “Go into the village over there. As soon as you enter it, you will find tied up there a colt that no one has ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘Its master needs it, and he will send it back right away.’”

Mark 11:1-3

Think

Provision and praise seem to travel together. God miraculously provides, and then we praise.

Eventually, the Holy Spirit will lead us to disconnect the two… to acknowledge deep in our souls that God is worthy to be praised with or without a special act of provision. In my life, I can look back and see a strange reality. What I often perceived as God’s failing to provide was actually just God choosing to not provide what I wanted. Invariably, I later realized that what I had wanted was something that would have derailed God’s plan for my life. By not providing it, God was protecting me.

God is providing. Be assured of that. The fact that you are breathing should assure you of that. And when you are disappointed in what or how God provides, know that it just might be that God is providing you what you need rather than what you want.

Trust God. God provides, and God knows what you truly need.

Pray

God, please ignore my wants and instead provide for my needs. I put my trust in you – you alone. Thank you for who you are! Amen.

Maybe true praise is less in the singing and more in the doing.

Does God want another song to rise from your lips, or would God prefer an act of costly obedience to come from your hands, feet, or mouth?

Forget the palm branches today and instead commit to giving God the palms of your hands!
