Following the Star

Pause

God, open my ears to hear,

soften my heart to believe,

and guide my feet to walk in your paths.

Listen

The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill my gracious promise with the people of Israel and Judah. In those days and at that time, I will raise up a righteous branch from David’s line, who will do what is just and right in the land. In those days, Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is what he will be called: The Lord Is Our Righteousness.

Jeremiah 33:14-16

Think

Recently, a friend asked me: Why bother doing good when evil triumphs anyway? A difficult question indeed in such a complicated world. The Christian life requires a deep dependence and waiting on God, believing that God will fulfill the promises made to the world and to us, no matter how improbable they may seem. However, the good news is that God has not only given me a hope to hold on to, but also an example that I can implement today.

In waiting, Jesus asks us to be faithful sharers with him to bring his shalom in a world of chaos. God has the ability to intertwine an individual’s goodwill and actions with others in a way that we cannot even comprehend or see. We must never tire of doing works of justice, compassion, love, and mercy, for we are not only vessels of hope, but we spread this hope to others. We are co-workers with God to fulfill the promises God makes and perfects.

Question to Ponder:

During this Advent season, how can you intentionally bring hope to someone who might need it?

Pray

God, I thank you for the promises you have made to your people. I am especially grateful that you have promised me…

Help me to see where you are moving in this world and where I can join in bringing your love and hope.

Amen.

Go

May the birth, life, resurrection, and soon return of Jesus

inspire me to rejoice, obey, believe and hope.
