Following the Star

Pause

Take a few deep breaths.

As you inhale, breathe in God’s peace for you.

As you exhale, breathe out all that keeps you from being at peace.

Listen

But according to his promise we are waiting for a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Therefore, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found by him in peace—pure and faultless. Consider the patience of our Lord to be salvation.

2 Peter 3:13-15a

Think

Earlier this year, I took a class on how to make macaron cookies. These are persnickety cookies! You have to be very precise with your ingredient measurements and with each step from start to finish. The macarons I made in class were great, but when I tried at home on my own, they didn’t turn out so well. Over the course of the year, I’ve tried to make macarons a few more times. Each time they are a little better, but I am frustrated that I can’t seem to get them to the same level as the ones we made in class. It has tested my patience.

Advent is a time when we can get more comfortable with being patient. While we wait for Christ’s birth and for God’s promises of a new heaven and a new earth to be made real, Peter encourages us to be at peace. While we patiently wait, we can be at peace because we know that God keeps God’s promises. In the meantime, we can share that peace with others as we strive to live following in Jesus’s footsteps.

Pray

Compassionate God, I wait for your coming and for your kingdom on earth to be made a reality for all people everywhere. While I wait, grant me patience and peace. Inspire me to do my part in ushering in your kingdom. Amen.

Go

Go now to a responsible involvement in the world.
Be at peace,
for God who created you,
Christ who redeems you,
and the Spirit who sustains you
go with you today and every day.
