Following the Star

Pause

Take a few deep breaths.

As you inhale, breathe in God’s peace for you.

As you exhale, breathe out all that keeps you from being at peace.

Listen

Lord, you’ve been kind to your land; you’ve changed Jacob’s circumstances for the better. You’ve forgiven your people’s wrongdoing; you’ve covered all their sins. Selah

Psalm 85:1-2

Think

Recall an experience of forgiveness. What emotions did you feel before forgiveness was shared? What emotions resulted from forgiveness?

I remember being upset with my mother in high school after a misunderstanding. My anger lasted for a few days and seemed to consume me. I struggled to focus on much else. After a few days, my mother and I sat down at the kitchen table and talked at length. By the end of our kitchen table session, each of us offered the other forgiveness. The anger had subsided and a sense of peace had taken its place.

Forgiveness is something we practice over and over again in our relationships with ourselves, others, and with God. The Psalmist reminds us that our God is a God of forgiveness! When we have “a kitchen table session” with God, and are honest about the things we have done and those things that we have left undone, God extends forgiveness towards us. Remember that God loves you and forgives you. May this truth bring you peace.

Pray

Forgiving God, I confess that there are ways that I turn away from my neighbor and from you. Forgive me. Help me to see those places in my life where forgiveness is needed, and then strengthen me to extend that forgiveness to others. Amen.

Go

Go now to a responsible involvement in the world.
Be at peace,
for God who created you,
Christ who redeems you,
and the Spirit who sustains you
go with you today and every day.
