Following the Star

Pause

Take a few deep breaths.

As you inhale, breathe in God’s peace for you.

As you exhale, breathe out all that keeps you from being at peace.

Listen

The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, God’s Son, happened just as it was written about in the prophecy of Isaiah:

Look, I am sending my messenger before you. He will prepare your way, a voice shouting in the wilderness: “Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight.”

Mark 1:1-3

Think

Advent is a time of preparing our hearts for Christ’s birth. Throughout Advent, we decorate trees and wrap presents, but how do we prepare to meet Jesus? Some early Christians in the first century called themselves “the Way.” They sought to follow Jesus together as a community. Their individual actions contributed to their community preparing a way for Jesus to one day return.

How might you prepare a way in your life for Jesus’ birth this Advent season? Christ calls us to join in with him in creating the kingdom of heaven here on earth. Together, we can begin that work as we wait for Jesus this Advent season. We can work for justice in our communities and treat one another with love. We can deepen our relationships with God through prayer and Scripture study. What might you do this Advent season to prepare for Christ’s birth?

Pray

Loving God, this Advent season I wait for your coming. As I wait, equip me to prepare a way for you in my life and in my community. Help me discern the ways you call me to use my gifts to help usher in your kingdom here on earth. Amen.

Go

Go now to a responsible involvement in the world.
Be at peace,
for God who created you,
Christ who redeems you,
and the Spirit who sustains you
go with you today and every day.
