Pause

Peace is certainly something we can want and pray for in our world. There is much unrest and violence that disrupts the peace of humanity. We can work to settle disputes and discourage violence, but perhaps peace starts closer to home.

Perhaps peace in our world begins with peace in our own lives. We each have places of unrest, and perhaps if we work for peace here, inside our lives, we might be able to know more of God’s peace in the world.

Listen

Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away."

Luke 21:29-33

Think

A lifetime, no matter how long or short it might be, provides us with the opportunity to experience life. We often measure a lifetime by its length or accomplishments, but what if we measured our lives by the quality in which we live them? A short life spent loving, giving, cherishing, and being open to life seems to have more value than a long life spent in fear, isolation, and distrust.

I also think that we can get wrapped up in not wanting to miss out on something, or we are so consumed by entertainment that we forget to live. Living from a place of peace, though, can free us to live openly. This openness enables us to live life abundantly and share God’s kingdom.

Pray

God help me to know when I am afraid, and when I am closed off. Help me to know your peace and live with openness to you, your creation, and others. Amen.
