Journey to the Cross

Pause

Begin by asking God for eyes to see, a heart to praise, and a voice to give thanks.

Center yourself in God’s goodness and faithful love. Rest in knowing that God’s intentions for you are for good, not for harm.

Be reminded that there is nothing that can separate you from God’s never-ending love.

Listen

“If someone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘Its master needs it.’” Those who had been sent found it exactly as he had said.

As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

They replied, “Its master needs it.”

Luke 19:31-34

Think

Not resisting is hard. Oftentimes we make everything an argument. We want to protect ourselves and our things. So sometimes we approach life and opportunities with our fists up. We don’t want to lose or let go.

But what if letting go weren’t about losing? Today’s scripture tells us that Jesus’s disciples do as Jesus asked and went into a nearby village to secure a colt. When the owners asked the disciples why they were taking the colt, their response, “Its master needs it,” was enough. They could’ve responded, “But aren’t we the colt’s owner, its master?” But they didn’t. The text leaves them silent. And we understand that they freely and willingly released the donkey to the care and use of another master — Jesus. They didn’t resist or put up a fight.

What if we viewed our possessions as temporarily on loan to us for the purpose of serving Jesus? When we hold our possessions loosely so that Jesus might make use of them, we are learning to praise God.

Pray

Lord, help me to praise you with my things. Free me from the power that my possessions have over me. Show me ways that I might help another person and honor you by holding them loosely. Amen.
