Wait… the word for “God” used in Hebrew in the first verse of the Bible is “Elohim,” which is plural. But, if we worship one God, how can that God be plural? Well… I don’t know the full extent of how God exists, and the writers of this ancient book don’t seem to care to explain. They just seem to gloss over it here as if it were some obvious thing that doesn’t need explaining. Maybe it doesn’t. They simply acknowledge God as plural, then go on to say that God’s “wind” moved. The “wind” of God and God worked together to create the heavens and the earth.

This passage is a good reminder that there is a mystery to God. There are parts of God we don’t fully understand, and that’s okay. If God is one, but also more than one – three in one? – it shows God isn’t bound by what we can imagine. Perhaps we can put aside the need for answers and certainty and just listen to the story of Creation. Perhaps we can simply let God be God.

Creator God, Jesus, Holy Wind, create in me a heart of humility. Guide me to understand that I won’t always understand. Lead me to trust that you are both the voice behind Creation and the wind fulfilling Creation. Amen.
