Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God, all creatures here below;

Praise God for all that love has done;

Creator, Christ, and Spirit, One.

William B. Abernathy, the Doxology (adapted 1995)

Listen

The heavens and the earth and all who live in them were completed. On the sixth day God completed all the work that he had done, and on the seventh day God rested from all the work that he had done. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all the work of creation.

Genesis 2:1-3

Think

God wasn’t done creating after the sixth day. On the seventh day, God created the Sabbath. I know this sounds a bit off the wall and paradoxical, but God sets a great example through many creative ways in Genesis 1. God creates the world. God creates all living things. God creates humanity in God’s own image to live as creative beings. God then creates flow.

By “flow,” I mean God creates an example of a balanced lifestyle. Throughout the week, God and the “wind” of God (aka the Holy Spirit) are hard at work. They work together to speak and create things into being. Then, once they’ve created humanity with their own ability to create, God rests. God makes space to let creation find its flow.

Similarly, as we live and create, we need to find flow. There are times to work hard and there are times to rest. There are times to stand up for justice on behalf of the oppressed, and there are times for us to listen and learn from them. Remember that resting doesn’t mean that creation stops. What we create continues to move and find its flow. God set the example of proper flow for us to follow.

Pray

Creator God, Savior Jesus, Holy Presence, thank you for the example you set by creating balance and flow. Help me to find my flow. Lead me to create new relationships, new opportunities to experience you, new ways to find balance. Amen.

Go

Go now, knowing the God of Creation, Savior of all people and Divine Presence, goes before you to where you’re headed, stays behind with the things you leave, walks alongside you every step of the way, and works within you to redeem what you believe to be broken.
